Signs it's time to upgrade your panel

Not every old panel needs replacing. If any of these sound familiar, have us take a look and we'll tell you honestly what you need.

Breakers trip often

If running the microwave and a space heater together shuts things off, your circuits are overloaded.

You still have a fuse box

Fuse boxes and knob-and-tube wiring are still common in Portland's older bungalows and Foursquares. Many are undersized, and some insurers ask about them.

Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel

These brands have a long record of breakers that may not trip when they should. We recommend replacing them.

You're adding a big load

An EV charger, heat pump, hot tub or ADU often needs more capacity than a 100-amp panel can give.

Flickering or dimming lights

Lights that dim when the AC or dryer starts can point to an overloaded panel or loose connections.

Warm panel, buzzing or burning smell

Don't wait on these. Call us right away at 503-583-8050.

Before & after: fuse box to breaker panel

This old fuse box had heat damage on the wall next to it. We replaced it with a new breaker panel with room to grow, and wired a Tesla EV charger at the same time.

Panel upgrade FAQ

Have a different question? Call 503-583-8050.

How much does a panel upgrade cost?

It depends on the panel size, whether the service and meter base need replacing, and where the panel is located. We give you a clear written quote after seeing your setup.

How long will my power be off?

Most panel replacements are finished in one day, and we'll tell you ahead of time when the power goes off. Service upgrades that need PGE to disconnect and reconnect depend on their schedule.

Do I need 200 amps?

Not always. If you're adding an EV charger, heat pump, hot tub or ADU, 200 amps is often the right call. A load calculation tells us for sure.

Is my Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel dangerous?

These panels have a history of breakers that can fail to trip during an overload, and many home inspectors and insurers flag them. We recommend replacing them.
