Generator FAQ

Have a different question? Call 503-583-8050.

What size generator do I need?

It depends on what you want running during an outage. We size the generator to your home and your list, whether that's a few essential circuits or the whole house.

Standby or portable?

A standby generator starts by itself and runs on your gas or propane supply. A portable hookup costs less but you start the generator, plug it in and refuel it yourself.

Is it safe to plug a generator into a dryer outlet?

No. Backfeeding a home without a transfer switch or interlock can send power out onto the utility lines and injure line workers. A proper inlet and transfer switch prevents that.

Is battery backup a good option?

For shorter outages and essential circuits, yes. It's quiet and needs no fuel. For long outages or whole-home power, a standby generator is usually the better fit.
